Moate Historical Society – Winter Lecture Series


Jeremiah Sheehan Memorial Lecture, Monday 17th September, 8.15pm, Grand Hotel, Moate

The Society’s 2012 winter lecture series opens with the annual Jeremiah Sheehan Memorial Lecture on Monday next, 17th September, in the Grand Hotel Moate. This year’s lecture entitled “Sligo, a County Full of Monuments” will be presented by

Martin A. Timoney, BA, FRSAI, MIAI.

Martin is a native of Knocknarea, Co. Sligo, he studied geography and archaeology at UCG (1966-1969), taught maths in Scarriff from 1969 to 1974 and all three subjects in Castlerea from 1974 to 1997. He works as a research archaeologist in Sligo, Leitrim, Roscommon & Donegal. He has served Sligo Field Club in all capacities including Editor of A Celebration of Sligo, First Essays for Sligo Field Club, (2002).

He lives in Keash with his wife, Mary B. Timoney, author of “Had Me Made” A Study of the Grave Memorials of Co. Sligo from c. 1650 to present day. The Society had the pleasure of hosting a lecture by Mary based on this topic in November 2011.
